About the project
Our instructional materials were developed through the NSF Improving Undergraduate STEM Education project, Collaborative Research: Designing Chatbot-Based Learning Experiences to Enhance Preservice Elementary Teachers’ Responsiveness to Student Mathematical Thinking (#2236164).
The project focuses on helping preservice elementary teachers develop responsive mathematics teaching practices through practice-based learning and AI-enhanced simulations. The instructional modules provide opportunities to examine teaching practice, analyze responsive teaching moves, rehearse questioning with virtual AI students, receive feedback from a virtual mentor, and reflect on the experience.
Module structure
Each module is grounded in practice-based teacher education and includes opportunities for:
- 1
Representation of practice
Examining examples of responsive mathematics teaching.
- 2
Decomposition of practice
Analyzing specific teaching moves and their purposes.
- 3
Approximation of practice
Rehearsing responsive teaching through interaction with AI agents.
- 4
Reflection
Considering the effectiveness of questions and possible next instructional moves.
